Indian has, recently, been recognized as one of the five emerging biotech leaders in Asia Pacific. On basis of number of companies, India ranks third with more than 325 biotech players with top three companies contributing 27 per cent of the revenues. The industry generated revenues of more than $2 billion in fiscal year 2007 registering a growth rate of 30 per cent. The Biopharma segment accounted for $1.4billion,
that is 65 per cent of the total revenue. Bio-services and bio-agri segments contributed $550 million. Bio-industrial and bio-informatics generated Rs.4 billion and Rs.1.3 billion respectively. Total exports were Rs.10 billion. The sector also witnessed 37 percent increase in investment of Rs.22.7 billion in 2007. The industry is expected to touch US$ 5 billion in revenues by 2010 at a CAGR of 35.1 per cent.
Earlier there was a lack of quality standards and shortage of manpower in the sector, however the sector now has a rich pool of technically educated and experienced people. The bio-technology sector in country is expected to generate over a million jobs in agriculture, pharmaceutical and medical segments by 2010. The attrition rates in the sector are also high – 37 percent. There is a need to streamline compensation policy and provide attractive incentives to avoid attrition. Though the sector is becoming popular with trained and skilled human resource, the gap in drug discovery and clinical development is witnessing a reverse brain drain. A large number of Indian scientists coming back to work with Indian companies here. The sector also offers good packages to bioscience graduates. Their salaries could hover at Rs 3 lakh a year at 0-2 year level. The are also entitled to benefits coming from patents, ESOPs and specialized research.
Some of the major players in Biopharma segment include Serum Institute of India, Biocon Limited, Panacea Biotech, Nicholas Piramal,
Wockhardt Limited, Shantha Biotechnics, Bharat Biotech, Eli Lilly, AV Thomas. Key players in Bio-informatics segment include Ingenovis, Strand Genomics, Ocimum Bio solutions, Reliance Life sciences and Accelrys while in bio-agri segment Rasi Seeds is a key player.
